Connect With MyKayla:
Mykayla Skinner-Harmer is an American Artistic Gymnast. Mykayla was a US 2016 Olympic Team Member, a four-time Worlds Medalist, a six-time National Team Member, and a 2021 Olympic hopeful amazing gymnast. She is known for her high level of difficulty on vault and floor performances. She was introduced to gymnastics at an early age through her sisters, who are former gymnasts themselves. She used to hate gymnastics as she was growing up having a different set of activities from girls her age along with the tough and gruesome life of an athlete. But, her life changed as she learned to love what she does and decided it is her dream and she’s going to push through and reach the top.

Shirley Owens: Hello and welcome back. Today, I'm reflecting on my convo with MyKayla Skinner. We talked a lot about mindset and hard work. My daughter Gracie was MyKayla's teammate at one time and became a D1 Collegiate Scholarship Gymnast. I believe that the percentage of doing that is like 0.01%. So hard work isn't a new concept for me. What I learned from listening to MyKayla and watching my daughter from age eight was that there are a lot of things that define what hard work, dedication and commitment mean. It means NEVER GIVING UP, literally. Even when you fall on your face, it means, the more you fall on your face, the more you learn about not falling on your face. It meant having a temp of 102 and still going to the gym to lay on the floor just so that she didn't have an excuse to not be there. It meant showing up at gym meets with a full on concussion, to root for her teammates and not allowing them to give up Even though she couldn't even watch them through the blur of her headache. It means, doing whatever it takes to keep doing whatever it takes to become whatever you want to be. It means, no matter who lets you down, how many adventures you don't get to go on with your friends, It meant only having one full week a year off, working on Christmas Eve, new year's Eve, Halloween, Memorial day, labor day, and most other holidays. It means you show up no matter what, with broken bones, bruises, layers of skin torn, days, weeks, and years, even decades of never waking up with a body that isn't sore. It means literally no excuses to not be there in it doing what is necessary, the true meaning of blood, sweat, and tears. Now most of us don't have to go through all this to get what we want, but watching these girls reminds me that we can, we can do hard things.

This week, I would have you look into what it is that you're lacking right now? What is it that you want? What is it that you have to do to get it? What's holding you back? If you told yourself that there were no excuses, what could you accomplish? You were all so much stronger than you think. You can do hard things. So this week, maybe you can just try a little bit harder, be a little bit better, work a little bit longer and get a little bit closer to getting whatever it is that you want. I love you all so much. I wish you a powerful excuse free week, and I will see you next Tuesday.
